The city of Izmir celebrates spring with an array of artistic events, including the much-anticipated International Polyphonic Choirs Festival and exclusive performances by noted musicians

This May, the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality aims to enrich the city's cultural scene with a dynamic selection of concerts and exhibitions at the esteemed Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center (AASSM).

These events promise a rich blend of local and international culture.

Concerts in Izmir during May

The month begins with a standout performance by the Borusan Quartet. They will present "German Romanticism in Chamber Music" on May 2. This concert concludes its 2023-2024 season in Izmir, offering classical music enthusiasts a refined auditory experience.

On May 4, acclaimed Turkish vocalist Isin Karaca will perform with a 65-piece symphony orchestra. Reflecting on the event, Karaca says, "These are songs that hold a special place in everyone’s heart, now reimagined in a symphonic format to create a truly memorable evening."

Recitals, baroque melodies in Izmir

The following week, young piano prodigy Arya Su Gulenc will delight audiences with a recital on May 7. Gulenc, who started her piano training at the age of 6 and has won multiple international competitions, is poised to deliver an inspiring performance.

The "Baroque Melodies" concert on May 9 features an intriguing collaboration between Joanna Goodale on piano and kemence (fiddle) players Sokratis Sinopoulos and Derya Turkan.

Musical diversity takes over Izmir

Additional musical treats include the Cello Piano Recital by Umit Isgorur and Ozgur Aydin on May 14. The month also features the Leyla Gencer Memorial Concert and the Youth Stage is Yours event on May 19, which spotlight young talent and engage younger audiences in the performing arts.

Festival and exhibitions in Izmir

The Izmir International Polyphonic Choirs Festival will showcase global vocal talent from May 20 to 26. On the exhibition front, AASSM hosts several significant shows. The Aysegul Gungoren Mud-RA Ceramic Exhibition runs from May 3 to 26.

The International Yasar Kemal Portrait Caricature Exhibition by the Cartoonists Association, Izmir Branch, opens on May 6 and continues until June 2.
