200-year-old watermill in Samsun, Türkiye, still in operation

A 200-year-old watermill in the Cayircokek sub-district of Samsun's, Tekkeköy region in Türkiye is still in operation despite developing technology.

The wheels of the mill, which are about 200 years old, turn with water coming from Gebi Creek.

Adil Caglayan, 60, who runs the mill, takes a share of the flour instead of money from those who bring their grain for grinding.

Caglayan told an Anadolu Agency reporter that he is happy to run the water mill, which has rich historical heritage.

Stating that he loves his work, which he inherited from his grandfather and father, Caglayan said, “I am here so that this work will not end. I have been doing this work since I was a child. I want to protect this historical monument and show it to future generations. The surrounding villagers come here and grind their corn and wheat. It used to be very busy in the past, but in the last 10-15 years, the number of visitors has decreased.”

Caglayan emphasized that there used to be many stonemasons in the past, but nowadays it is not possible to find a master to change the millstone, and said that as time passes, it becomes harder to preserve historical buildings.

Aslan Cakir, who grinds his corn in the mill, noted that his wife bakes bread and fries fish from the flour ground in the water mill, so they prefer the old mill.
