Deputy FM says US veto of Palestinian membership 'shameful'

Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmet Yildiz criticized the U.S. veto of a draft resolution advocating for Palestine's full membership at the United Nations, labeling it as "shameful."

Yildiz stressed the urgency of achieving a cease-fire in Gaza, advocating for Palestine's full U.N. membership and the initiation of negotiations for a two-state solution with international support. He expressed disappointment at the U.S. veto, considering it a regrettable situation.

Deputy Minister Yildiz highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, condemning the extensive destruction and high death toll. He called for international solidarity in urging for a cease-fire, noting discrepancies in recognizing Palestine among nations despite widespread criticism of Israel's actions.

Yildiz emphasized the crucial role of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) in supporting Palestinian refugees and criticized attempts to defund or dismantle the organization. He criticized Israel for consistently violating international law and failing to fulfill its obligations, asserting that the current occupation cannot persist.

Despite Yildiz's advocacy for Palestine's full U.N. membership, the U.S. ultimately vetoed the draft resolution at the U.N. Security Council meeting.

The resolution, proposed by Algeria, garnered 12 votes in favor, with two abstentions from the U.K. and Switzerland.
